Weeklong activities show support for Undocumented Student Action Week
Imperial Valley College joined community colleges across state earlier this month for Undocumented Student Action Week to advocate and provide support services for undocumented students. Activities that ran Oct. 14-18 included the oppor-tunity to register to vote, showing support by wear-ing a shirt, sticker or button supporting DACA students, a documentary screening of, “We are DREAMers,” rock painting with rocks to be displayed in the new Student Equity Garden behind the Student Affairs Building, and postcards to be presented to state As-semblyman Eduardo Gar-cia, D-Coachella.Since President Trump’s 2017 announcement to re-scind the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, the statu sand safety of undocu-mented students has been uncertain. As the nation’ s largest post-secondary education system in the nation and serving the largest number of undocumented students within the state, communi-ty colleges are committed to serving all students, regard-less of immigration status. IVC Superintendent/ President Dr. Martha Gar-cia said she would like to reassure current and poten-tial students that Imperial Valley College is a safe and welcoming environment for people of all backgrounds. Un documented Student Action Week is supported statewide by the Commu-nity College League, Cal-ifornia Community Col-leges, the Foundation for California Community Col-leges, the Student Senate for California Community Colleges, and Immigrants Rising. In February 2017, the Imperial Community Col-lege Board of Trustees ad-opted are solution in sup-port of the DA CA program.
