Legion post provides masks for IID
EL CENTRO -Members of the Imperial Irrigation District’s Office of Emergency Management recently received a small but helpful number of homemade face coverings/ masks, courtesy of the Boyce Aten American Legion Post 25 Disaster Preparedness & Response Committee.
The IID department made its request for the masks to the Imperial County Emergency Operations Center, which in turn is collaborating with the Legion post’s DPRC, formed to lead a project dubbed Operation Victory Virus.
OVV is supported by the Imperial Valley Patriotic Planning Committee, the American Legion Department of California 30th District ( seven additional posts within Imperial County) and a very amiable collection of volunteer stitchers from the community.
The OVV Face Covering/Mask Project includes monetary and material donations, and volunteer stitchers. The stitchers obtain materials to sew homemade face masks per CDC standards and provide the completed masks to the Legion post. The post’s DPRC then provides the masks to the EOC for distribution.
The DPRC said it currently needs more volunteer stitchers and ¼ - inch elastic.
Other OVV projects include:
Bottled water: DPRC assisted in obtaining bottled water for the county first responders and County Area Agency on Aging. The AAA has seen a huge increase in need during this pandemic and now tries to help over 1,000 seniors with food and water. The donations were provided from our local Coca- Cola Bottling Co. and Pepsi Cola Bottling Co.
Friday Night Steak Dinners: After a short absence, the Boyce
Aten Post’s Friday Night Steak Dinner has returned. Although the price increased to $ 15 a dinner, the former price of $ 12 will still be honored when accompanied by a food donation. All canned foods and other staples will go to the county AAA to assist in their efforts to aid local seniors. Along with water, the most requested items are beans, rice and tomato sauce. Friday Night Steak Dinner is takeout only and is available Fridays from 6 to 8 p. m. while supplies last. Call (760) 352-2964 after 6 p. m. to order ahead.
Lunch: Take-out lunches are served from at the Boyce Aten Post Hall from 11 a. m. to 1 p. m. to help support OVV efforts. The hall is open to accept donations, provide materials to volunteer stitchers and to collect the homemade masks. To order lunch, please call (760) 325-2964 in advance. Menu information is available on the post’s Facebook page https:// www.facebook.com/AmericanLegionPost25ElCentroCa/ or by calling during the services.
