The Student Research Symposium
The Student Research Symposium (SRS) was held on Feb. 28-29, 2020, at San Diego State University, San Diego.
SRS is an open event where San Diego State University students present their research, scholarship, and creative activities. The symposium is a two-day event, occurring each spring semester, that recognizes the outstanding scholarly accomplishments of SDSU students.
The SDSU-Imperial Valley Campus had a research group of 10 students, led by their professor/mentor, Linda Abarbanell, Ed.D. The group consisted of the following students: Jacob Carrillo, Michaelle Castro Franco, Dario ReyesGastelum, Sonia Jimenez Garcia, Lawson Hardrick, Elvira Reyes-Hernandez, Ana Jauregui, Ivette Lopez, John Moreno Jr, and Jorge Ocegueda.
The group presented posters on two research projects that are ongoing here in the Imperial Valley. Both studies are focused on Cultural Explanatory Models for causes and treatments of two diseases, cancer and HIV/AIDS. Participants in the study are from this area, and more importantly, on the U.S.-Mexico border. These studies are being performed in collaboration with medical students from the Universidad Autonoma de Baja California (UABC).
Students participated in the symposium along with more than 500 students, and received the Dean’s award for their research study presentation.
Students said this was a great student research experience and thank Dr. Abarbanell for her mentorship, guidance and encouragement.
They would also like to acknowledge Dean Gregorio Ponce, Ed.D, and SDSU, for funding their research, and attendance of the SRS conference.
