National Action Party Chair in Mexicali Antonio López Merino said his party has introduced a proposal in the City Council to provide economic support to 35,000 families. The funding would come from savings produced by the negotiation of the city’s debt and the delay of the downtown rehabilitation project.

In addition, López Merino said a proposal for fiscal incentives was introduced that includes a 5 percent discount on property taxes, 50 percent and 100 percent forgiveness of municipal tax surcharges, 50 percent forgiveness of surcharges on fines, and a 25 percent discount on other municipal services during July.

A proposal was also introduced to create an emergency fund for the acquisition of bio-sanitary equipment for public safety agents.

“Today we demand the mayor of Mexicali to act at the height of what Mexicali needs, an Economic Reactivation Plan and Protocols to face the new normality,” Lopez Merino said. “Mexicali residents require (authorities to) manage and seek real coordination with the federation in order to obtain a response from the federal government on urgent issues.”

The party has proposed an extension of payment of federal taxes and other fees, as well as a reopening program for small businesses and a response to the issue of high energy costs in Mexicali.

Assemblywoman Eva María Vásquez said the city council and the state have not established a health and economic reactivation plan, because they are concerned and occupied in political issues that benefit the governing party interests.
