Consulate resumes mobile services

CALEXICO – Mobile consulate services are back on schedule after nearly two years of closures due to the pandemic.

Deputy Consul Tonatiuh Romero from the Mexican Consulate in Calexico said the situation has created hardships for Mexican citizens residing in the United States.

“The idea of the mobile consulate is to bring the consular services to the people,” he said.

One goal of the consulate is to ensure Mexican citizens have the opportunity to acquire a Consular ID card. Romero said this identification document allows people to use banking services and is recognized by many authorities.

“The Consular ID is an innovation,” Romero added.

The ID is issued by the Mexican government for migrants who have no other documents. Romero said the ID is beneficial to Mexican citizens in the United States.

“When you give ID cards to the people you are also protecting them against the acts of certain authorities,” he said.

Mexican passports and birth certificates are also available from the mobile consulate. Romero asked those seeking services to call the consulate at (760) 357-3863, ext. 110, and set an appointment. He stated their main objective is to help the community.

“We haven’t gone (out) for two years,” Romero said. “We’re kind of flexible.”

Romero advised those who are requesting documents to check out the consulate’s website https://consulmex.sre.gob. mx/calexico/ to ensure requirements for services are met and to view a schedule of future mobile consulate events in Imperial County.

On Saturday, the mobile consulate will be at the Calipatria City Hall, 125 Park St., from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
