Attorney General’s office headquarters damaged by arson
A group of demonstrators protesting homicides of women allegedly burned the main entrance of the Attorney General’s Office headquarters Sunday evening.
According to media reports, the demonstration started at 6:30 p.m. at City Hall. Dozens of demonstrators then walked toward the AG’s Office.
Some women reportedly vandalized the structure with graffiti.
Then, a trash can was set on fire near the offices. The fire extended to the building.
Firefighters arrived and were able to control the fire hours later.
Televisa Mexicali reported that three women were arrested for their alleged involvement in the arson case. Other media outlets reported the arrest of eleven suspects, including a minor and a man. All were released from custody.
LGBTQ groups applauded the arsonists. On Monday morning, the Attorney General’s Office headquarters were shut down for fear of a collapse.
La Crónica newspaper reported that archives, documents, computers and an automated teller machine were damaged by the fire.
In a prepared statement, the Attorney General’s Office condemned both the homicides of women and vandalism.
