Last month turned out to be the bloodiest in Mexicali’s recent history.

According to reports released by the state Attorney General’s Office, the city recorded 40 homicides in

April — higher than the previous record of 38 registered in August 2021.

So far in 2022, Mexicali has recorded 111 homicides.

In 2006, the city reported 85 homicides. Six years later, the figure climbed to 155.

Starting in 2020, the city has passed the 200 threshold.

Last year, Mexicali recorded close to 300 murders. Mexicali police said 25 of the homicides recorded last month occurred in the urban area and the rest in rural Mexicali. Firearms were involved in more than half of the killings.
