Imperial County Sheriff ’s Office recently submitted a report to the county District Attorney’s office in connection with fatal December shooting of Jordan Schmidt near Brawley, ICSO Sgt. Murad Masad said Friday.

A prosecutor at the D.A.’s office did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Agencies do not typically forward reports to the D.A. unless they have identified a suspect and linked that person to the incident.

Schmidt, 32, suffered multiple gunshot wounds and was killed near the intersection of Highway 78 and Hovley Road where his body was found, the Sheriff ’s Office reported at the time. Investigators previously said a motive for the shooting was not known.

Deputies received a call about 4 a.m. on Dec. 15 from the Brawley Police Department regarding a “man down” and possibly deceased near Highway 78 and Hovley, north of Riverview Cemetery. The matter was turned over to the Sheriff ’s Office because the crime scene was outside Brawley city limits.
