Teacher and 3 students injured in chemistry lab explosion

An explosion in a junior high school chemistry lab injured a teacher and three of her students Monday, according to media reports.

The incident was reported at 2 p.m. at Junior High School 4 in the Pueblo Nuevo area.

Police and firefighte­rs were deployed to the scene after the explosion of an unknown chemical was reported.

The teacher told the authoritie­s she was cleaning the laboratory when the explosion took place.

She reportedly suffered injuries to one of her legs.

According to the teacher, the explosion took place after a container was opened containing a greenish substance.

Two 14-year-old students and a 15-year-old one suffered smoke inhalation. The students also had irritated skin.

Hazardous chemical specialist­s decontamin­ated the laboratory.
