Campus construction update

-

The $17.7 million renovation of three of the oldest classroom buildings on the Imperial Valley College is well underway with total completion expected in August.

All are original buildings on the campus.

Building 200 is fully completed. Office staff has moved back in, and it will house classes when the Spring Semester begins in February.

Building 300, which houses music classes, is expected to be completed by April 30 while work on building 800 will begin this month with an expected completion by Aug. 30.

Funding for the project came from both the 2010 Measure J bond measure and state matching funds. Each source contributed 50 percent.

The other major Measure J funded project on campus, construction of the $37.1 million Auto Technology and Laboratory building, is moving forward in the preconstruction process. The request for construction proposals was released in December. Proposals are due Jan. 30, and contractor interviews are slated for Feb. 13.

The high-tech Automotive Technology, Arts, and Engineering education complex will replace the existing 60-year-old classrooms that have housed automotive training since the campus opened on Aten Road in 1962. The new building is expected to be completed in December 2025.

With completion of that project, funds from Measure J will be exhausted.

Other construction and projected completion dates include:

Emergency HVAC renovation in buildings 10 and 100, which will be completed by Jan. 30;

Athletic restroom addition, exterior lighting and the Borderlink antenna project with expected completed in December;

Tennis courts renovation with expected completion in August;

Classroom card access system with expected completion in June.

Additionally, work has begun on planning, engineering and design on several projects authorized with passage of the Measure B bond measure in November. They include the Public Safety Regional Training Facility, which has been budgeted for $39.6 million; the Student Services Building, budgeted for $32.3 million and a $9.6 million maintenance, operations and warehouse building.
