Mexican Consulate, USD join in inauguration of ‘Hostile Terrain 94: California’ exhibit
SAN DIEGO – The Consulate of Mexico in Calexico attended the inauguration of the adapted version of “Hostile Terrain 94: California” exhibit at the University of San Diego (USD) Copley Library, hosted by the university’s Department of Anthropology, on Friday, February 17, in San Diego.
Per the Mexican Consulate, the exhibition displays the deaths of migrants at the Baja California and California border between 1994 to 2021, making visible the terrible costs of trying to cross a dangerous border area divided by a fence.
According to the USD website, this is a participatory exhibition created by the Undocumented Migration Project, which visually displays the deaths of undocumented migrants on California soil or waterways. Visitors to the exhibit are asked to reflect upon U.S. border policy and the violence it inflicts on vulnerable people, per the website.
The exhibition will include information on how to support humane migration and feature a creative space where visitors can write messages, produce art and leave altar offerings in remembrance of the deceased migrants, according to the USD website.
The Undocumented Migration Project (UMP) is a 501©(3) research, arts, and education collective that seeks to raise awareness and inspire positive social change about migration issues globally while also working to reunite families with their loved ones who have disappeared while crossing the US/Mexico border, per their site.
“Hostile Terrain 94: California” sponsored by USD’s Department of Anthropology and the Undocumented Migration Project, is free of cost and will be on view at USD from February 8 to May 24.
