How students prepare for High School Madness

- BY GERARDO RODRIGUEZ SHS Student Writer

It’s March, the Fair is open, and students are ready to demonstrate their school spirit in competitions at High School Madness.

High School Madness is a yearly event where the Imperial Valley high schools congregate and compete at the California Mid-Winter Fair & Fiesta in Imperial to have fun and enjoy the fair.

Tickets to enter High

School Madness are sold for $5 only inside Imperial Valley high schools for students. High School Madness tickets are also reserved for students who will perform or take photos and do interviews for their school. Otherwise, the tickets can be purchased from other students at an increased price.

Cynthia Villa, a senior and mascot for SHS, said she didn’t have to buy a ticket and was instead going to prepare for her performance at High

School Madness.

“Since I’m the mascot for SHS I have my ticket reserved ahead of time. I just chill and get ready to win this year,” Villa said. “I am going to prepare for High School Madness by bringing like a gallon of water because it’s going to be crazy this year. I’m just not trying to die inside the mascot (suit) this year.”

Monica Arredondo, a senior and editor for the SHS yearbook, said she was going to bring $40 and prepare for her job at High School Madness to take photos and interview students.

“We’re just going to take photos and get reactions from the SHS crowd,” Arredondo said.

Students who attend High School Madness and planning on hitting the Midway can bring around $90 for rides and eating food, as carnival wristbands on-site cost $55 and a meal can range from $10 to $30.

Nathan Zavala, a Southwest alumni who previously went to the Fair and High School

Madness said some advice for people going to High School Madness

“Make sure to keep your belongings safe on rides. My friend lost their house keys once,” Zavala said. “And to save money you can save your cup from the lemonade stand. My family has had the same cup for years. Aside from just that, for me, it’s going to be the usual corn dogs, ice cream, and, of course, the rides! (assuming it isn’t too windy).”
