“Selena fell head over heels for The Weeknd,” an insider says of the pair, who were flirty onstage at the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show on Nov. 11, 2015.
Bella Hadid had had enough of the drama. On Jan. 14, the stunning model posted a photo of herself flipping the middle finger at the camera, a move many fans interpreted as a clear message to Selena Gomez, who, it had just been revealed, is hooking up with the man Bella had dated for nearly two years, singer The Weeknd.
But it turns out Bella doesn’t even know the half of it. “Things are about to get way worse,” an insider tells In Touch exclusively. Bella — who was already humiliated when Selena, who’s friends with Bella’s sister, Gigi, was photographed kissing The Weeknd outside an LA restaurant on Jan. 10 — “is going to be livid when she finds out Selena has been secretly dating The Weeknd for a year!” That romance, combined with Selena’s other liaisons, has made this one of Hollywood’s most complicated social situations, filled with betrayals and ruined friendships. The signs about Selena and The Weeknd were there. In late 2015, Selena, 24, and The Weeknd, 26, both performed at the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show, where he literally bowed down to her onstage. Then in November, he released the song “Party Monster” off his third album, Star boy, featuring the lyrics, “Ooh, she mine/ooh girl, bump a line/angelina, lips like Angelina/ Like Selena, ass shaped like Selena.” But the pair managed to keep their romance secret. “Selena wasn’t honest with a lot of her friends about what was going on,” says a second insider. The Weeknd (real name: Abel Tesfaye) strung her along for months, promising he would end things with Bella, 20.
Bella suspected something was up long before her final split with The Weeknd in November. “Their relationship deteriorated as they started spending more and more time apart due to work commitments,” says a source. “She began to lose trust when his calls and texts became less frequent. In the back of her mind, she had her suspicions that there was someone else, but little does she know that person is Selena!”
Selena and The Weeknd’s romance is sending shockwaves through Hollywood. Gigi, 21, was horrified that Selena, a fellow member of Taylor Swift’s squad, would break girl code so blatantly. Even though she should have known better — Justin Bieber accused Selena of cheating with Gigi’s beau, Zayn Malik, 24, during their public Instagram spat last August — “Gigi wanted to give her the benefit of the doubt. But since learning that Selena’s been hooking up with her sister’s ex, she’s dropped her,” says the source. “Gigi refuses to answer Selena’s calls.”
Others in their incestuous little circle (see sidebar) are seeking revenge. Justin, 22, “is complaining to pals that Selena is using The Weeknd to get back at him, so he gave Selena a taste of her own medicine by hanging out with his former flame Kourtney Kardashian at the Peppermint Club” in West Hollywood on Jan. 14, says a second source. Like Justin, Kourtney, 37, “also had an ulterior motive for their night out together: She wanted to make Scott [Disick, 33] jealous because he wasn’t treating her with respect. When he went ballistic, Kourtney was secretly thrilled. Scott has apologized and promised to treat Kourtney better from now on.”
As she flaunts her new romance, Selena doesn’t seem to care about the mess she’s made. “Bella believes she’s a drama queen who likes to stir up trouble,” says the first source. And while Selena may try to blame this latest misstep on a rough year that ended in another rehab stint [in 2016], adds the second insider, “she knew exactly what she was doing.” ◼
