ANXIETY CONTROLLED MY LIFE

The actress opens up about debilitating panic attacks — and how she’s learning to cope

-

Pretty Little Liars alum Ashley Benson is fearlessly honest when it comes to talking about her struggles with anxiety. “It was really difficult for a long time,” says the 28-year- old actress. “In my [early] 20s, during the first two years of filming PLL, my dad had to stay at my house with me; I couldn’t even drive my car. It was so bad.” These days, Ashley — who was just announced as the new spokesperson for Olay’s Foaming Whip Body Wash — says she’s learned to manage her anxiety with exercise, diet and good sleep habits. “I still deal with it,” she says. “I’ve kind of learned to control it. When I’m traveling all the time, and not getting enough sleep, it kicks in more.” Here, the star talks to In Touch’s Katie Bruno about how she deals with bad days, life after PLL and her addiction to reality TV!

Why did you decide to open up about your experiences with anxiety? AB: I think it’s good to talk about it and let everyone know that a lot of people deal with it, and that there are ways to get help, like therapy.

How does it still affect your life? AB: There are times I’ll have an anxiety attack and think I’m dying. It’s horrible. Exercise, eating healthy and getting enough sleep helps.

You’ve also spoken out about body image and refusing to lose weight. AB: Everyone has an opinion on what they want you to look like. I try to stay in shape, but I have boobs and hips, so whatever! Botox and fillers are popular these days. Would you do either? AB: A lot of my friends get Botox, which is fine. But, as an actor, I need to move my face!

Have you kept in touch with your PLL co-stars? AB: I just talked to Shay [Mitchell] this morning. We all have such a special bond. We’re always checking up on each other.

The show was a huge hit. Do you ever feel pressure to top it? AB: No. I took a year off so I wouldn’t rush into something that wasn’t right. I just finished filming Her Smell with Elisabeth Moss, which was such a great experience.

And you’ve partnered with Olay… AB: Yes, I’m a big fan of the brand and it was the perfect opportunity.

What’s next for you? AB: I’m directing an episode of the PLL spinoff, The Perfectionists. And I’d love to produce. And I also want to move to Paris to learn how to cook! [ Laughs]

What about settling down and starting a family? AB: Right now I’m really focused on my career. But I love kids, so maybe in a couple of years I’ll pop out a few! ◼
