A decade after Katie Holmes broke his heart and wounded his pride with a surprise divorce filing, Tom Cruise remains single
He knows how to make an entrance. On May 4, Tom Cruise arrived at the world premiere of Top Gun: Maverick via helicopter, expertly landing it on the deck of the USS Midway in San Diego. Swoons ensued as he stepped out of the chopper in sunglasses (of course) and a beautifully tailored suit, flashing his trademark smile. But while his costars, including his leading lady, Jennifer Connelly, and his on-screen son, Miles Teller, both had their spouses on their arms, Tom didn’t bring a date.
It’s been that way for a decade. “Tom is one of the biggest stars in the entire world, and can probably have any woman he wants, but he insists on being alone,” an insider tells In Touch. “He finally told friends,
‘I haven’t had a date in 10 years.’ ” The reason?
In the summer of 2012, Tom — who’s about to turn 60 — had his heart shattered into a million pieces when Katie Holmes blindsided him with divorce papers. “She broke his heart, so he’s avoided romance ever since.

PROTECTING HIMSELF
He’s hardly the same man he was when he jumped on the couch on TV and giddily professed his love for Katie after just a month of dating in 2005. “He’s not only gun-shy because of how things ended with Katie, but he also went through two other divorces,” says the source, referring to his failed marriages to Mimi Rogers and Nicole Kidman. He doesn’t want to get hurt or be humiliated again.” After Katie left him, Tom admitted he was “deeply saddened,” which the source says is an understatement. “He didn’t see it coming. No one has ever done that to him.”
The one time he did try to date — six months after his marriage ended — he asked out Cynthia Jorge, then the manager at NYC’s Beauty & Essex restaurant after she daringly slipped him her card when he ate their for lunch one day. Days later, an eyewitness told In Touch at the time that the pair were “grinding together” at NYC nightclub Le Baron. “Tom seemed to be in his own world, completely smitten,” said the eyewitness. “But then she blew him off when he asked her out again. So the hits kept coming.” Meanwhile, exes Nicole Kidman, 54, and Penélope Cruz, 48, both went on to marry, and Katie has dated up a storm — first with Jamie Foxx, 54, then with chef Emilio Vitolo, 34, and most recently
with Broadway performer Bobby Wooten III, 33.
KEEPING BUSY
Over the past decade, Tom’s career has become the love of his life. “He combats his loneliness by working 24/7,” says the source. “The Mission: Impossible films and Top Gun: Maverick have been his sole interests in recent years — or more like obsessions.” People around Tom are in awe of his work ethic but think his singular focus “is not healthy,” adds the source. “Tom needs real love in his life again. He just needs to put himself out there and trust that he won’t get burned again.” ◼
