The con­ve­nience store busi­ness—a $550 bil­lion in­dus­try—is dom­i­nated by gi­ants like the Ja­pa­nese-owned 7-Eleven, which last year took in $29 bil­lion from 8,700 North Amer­i­can out­posts, and Ali­men­ta­tion CoucheTard, the Que­be­cois owner of Cir­cle K and Dairy Mart.

Fast food, old and new: Pan­era ($2.8 bil­lion in rev­enue in 2016, be­fore it sold for $7.5 bil­lion to Ger­man con­glom­er­ate JAB), Dunkin’ Donuts ($860 mil­lion in rev­enue), Chipo­tle ($4.5 bil­lion in rev­enue)—and even the fast-grow­ing likes of Sweet­green.
