After graduating from BYU in 1996, Nate Quigley and his wife, Vanessa, never thought they’d move back to Utah. But by 2013, the co-founder couple were living in Florida and struggling to launch Chatbooks, an app that converts digital photos into physical books and greeting cards. They decided they needed to move to jump-start their business. Silicon Valley, New York City, and Seattle were all contenders, but they gambled on Salt Lake City instead. It was “absolutely the best decision we’ve ever made,” says Nate, whose office is in nearby Provo. “The first week I was here, I had lunch with a designer I’d been following on Twitter. Two days later, we were building out interfaces for our app together.” The Quigleys now employ 120 people, have raised $20 million, and are raising seven children (six of whom are pictured, from left: Declan, Calvin, Isabelle, Laken, Aidan, and Claire).
