After Hurricane Maria ravaged Puerto Rico last year, entrepreneur Carlos Barrio—shown delivering chairs to a wedding in St. Petersburg—decided his company, AMB Rental, needed to expand to the mainland U.S. if it was going to survive the next few years. “We needed to make a move fast and find a place where we knew we’d grow,” says Barrio. His 17-employee family business rents tables, tents, trade show booths, and A/V equipment for private parties and corporate events. “That’s why we chose Orlando.” Barrio, who relocated to Florida last year along with as many as 70,000 other displaced Puerto Ricans (his sister stayed behind to manage AMB’s operations on the island), likes what so many entrepreneurs find appealing about the Central Florida city: a booming economy, mild winters—and access to the buying power of the 70 million-plus tourists and conventioneers who visit Orlando every year, more than any other city in America.
