The Clippers are expected to sign 6-foot free agent combo guard Yogi Ferrell to a 10-day contract once he’s cleared the necessary coronavirus health and protocols in the coming days, according to a tweet by The Athletic’s Shams Charania.

Ferrell could provide depth behind veteran guards Reggie Jackson and Rajon Rondo, whom stand to play heavy minutes in the absence of starting guard Patrick Beverley, who had surgery on a fractured bone in his left hand Friday and isn’t scheduled to be reassessed for another three to four weeks.

For Ferrell, it’s the 27-year-old’s second 10-day deal this season, following a similar deal in Cleveland in January, when he played in two games and averaged 9.5 points, 3.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.5 steals in those contests.

Veteran center DeMarcus Cousins and rookie forward Malik Fitts currently both signed 10-day contracts with the team last week, which began with the Clippers holding two open roster sports and needing to sign at least one player to bump their total to the league mandated 14.

Cousins, a four-time AllStar with strong bonds with several members of the Clippers, has played 13 minutes in two games, contributing 10 points, six rebounds and two assists. His presence gives the Clippers another option in the frontcourt, where they’ve been thin lately without center Serge Ibaka, who has missed 14 consecutive games and will miss at least three more with lower back tightness, Coach Tyronn Lue said.

After Fitts excelled in the G League bubble with the Agua Caliente Clippers this past season, the 23-year-old Lynwood native played his first game with the NBA Clippers on

Friday and missed his only shot in three minutes in the victory over Houston.

For Ferrell’s part, since going undrafted in 2016, he has spent time with the Brooklyn Nets and their G League affiliate, the Dallas Mavericks, the Sacramento Kings, the Cleveland Cavaliers and, this past shortened G League season, he played for the Utah Jazz’s Salt Lake City Stars.

His tenure with the Mavericks started in January 2017 with a 10-day deal in which he Ferrell — a collegiate standout at Indiana — became the third undrafted rookie in NBA history to register a 30-point game within his first 15 appearances when he hit nine of 11 3-point attempts en route to 32 points in a victory over Portland.

Shortly thereafter, he signed a multi-year deal with Dallas, for which he played all 82 games in 201718.

The next season, he signed with Sacramento, and averaged 5.3 points and 1.7 assists in two campaigns there.
