Vista Murrieta domination is thorough in win over Upland

Vista Murrieta’s Gavin Galzote leaps through the air as he carries the ball into the end zone for a touchdown Friday night against Upland.

Vista Murrieta took full advantage of every opportunit­y it was given as the host Broncos dominated from start to finish, defeating Upland 48-0 Friday night.

After taking a 7-0 lead in the first quarter on a 1-yard touchdown run by Matthew Caldera, which capped a 12-play, 66-yard drive, the Broncos converted three Upland turnovers into 20 points to grab a 27-0 lead.

Jones hit a wide-open Jack Pedersen for a 31-yard touchdown.

Broncos linebacker Steven Arteaga then intercepte­d York on Upland’s next possession, and five plays later running back Gavin Galzote scored on a 30-yard touchdown run.

York was intercepte­d again on the Scots’ next possession by cornerback Emilio Gutierrez, who returned the intercepti­on 35 yards for a touchdown.

“We are taking steps in the right direction,” said Vista Murrieta coach Eric Peterson. “We’re not close to where we want to be yet, but I am proud of players, who have had to deal with a lot of adversity.”

In addition to the three turnovers, Vista Murrieta (3-1) forced four punts, had nine plays for negative yardage, and held Upland (13) to 16 yards rushing in the first half.

Jones gave the Broncos a 34-0 lead with eight seconds left in the half, when he threw an 18yard touchdown to Ezekiel Vestal.

In the third quarter, Galzote, who rushed for 170 yards on 13 carries, scored on a 49-yard run.

The Broncos closed out the scoring in the fourth quarter on an 18-play, 93-yard drive when Jake Hogue rushed for a 4-yard touchdown.

Peterson added, “We’re still learning and I keep telling them about running to the football on defense and how they need to get after it.”

For Upland, York ended the night completing 8 of 16 passes for 75 yards, running back Zivan Ardines added 51 yards on 11 carries, and Michael Burnett led the receivers with three catches for 36 yards.

Jones completed 11 of 15 passes for 175 yards and receiver Grant Wayne added four receptions for 63 yards.

The Broncos rushed for 247 yards in the game.
