Giants’ winning streak now seven

-

Wilmer Flores homered and drove in three runs, Kris Bryant scored twice against his former team, and the San Francisco Giants hung on to beat the Chicago Cubs 6-5 on Sunday at Wrigley Field for their season-high seventh straight win.

Owners of the best record in the majors, the Giants matched their longest streak since a seven-game run in August 2020.

They were rolling along with a 6-3 lead in the seventh before the Cubs scored two while chasing Logan Webb (10-3). Chicago had the bases loaded with one out when submarining right-hander Tyler Rogers caught Willson Contreras looking at an 84 mph fastball on a 3-2 count. He then struck out Alfonso Rivas swinging at a 3-2 pitch.

The Cubs had the tying run on in the ninth after Jake McGee gave up a oneout double to Patrick Wisdom. But Frank Schwindel and Ian Happ grounded to first to end the game.

Flores hit an RBI single in the second and singled and scored in the fourth to make it 3-0. He matched a career high with his 18th homer when he launched a two-run shot to left against Justin Steele in the fifth to stretch the lead to 5-2.

The Giants’ Wilmer Flores is congratulated by Kris Bryant after homering in the fifth inning Sunday against the Cubs.

Webb gave up five runs and six hits in six-plus innings.

BLUE JAYS 22, ORIOLES 7 >> Lourdes Gurriel Jr. and Teoscar Hernández each hit a grand slam, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. slugged his 44th homer, and visiting Toronto overpowered Baltimore 22-7, finishing two runs shy of the club record.

Guerrero’s drive tied him with the Angels’ Shohei Ohtani for the major league lead. Jake Lamb also homered during a 10-run third for the Blue Jays, who took three of the four in the series.

Gurriel, who homered twice, finished with seven RBIs. Hernandez had five.

St. Louis has won four of six. Cincinnati and San Diego for the final NL wildcard spot. Cincinnati has lost five of seven.

Arenado hit a two-run homer in the first off Sonny Gray (7-7), who then retired the next 14 hitters.

St. Louis starter J.A. Happ (9-8) allowed two hits over 5 1/3 innings. BREWERS 11, INDIANS 1 >> Eric Lauer no-hit Cleveland into the sixth inning a day after Milwaukee threw a history-making no-no, and his teammates hit five homers.

Just hours after Corbin Burnes and Josh Hader combined on the record ninth no-hitter in the majors this season — and Cleveland’s record third time being no-hit this year — Lauer didn’t give up a hit until Ryan Lavarnway singled to center with one out in the sixth.

Lauer (6-5) allowed one run and three hits in 5 1/3 innings.

Kolten Wong and Avisaíl García each homered twice.

WHITE SOX 2, RED SOX 1 >> Leury Garcia homered with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning to lift Chicago over Boston.

Chicago took a 1-0 lead and a three-hit shutout into the ninth before Craig Kimbrel (4-4) struggled with his control, allowing a hit and two walks before Alex Verdugo’s tying sacrifice fly.

RANGERS 4, ATHLETICS 3 >> Isiah Kiner-Falefa had three hits and two RBIs, Taylor Hearn won his fourth straight start and Texas put another dent in Oakland’s playoff hopes.

Hearn (6-4) did not walk a batter for the third consecutive start and retired 16 of 17 after giving up backto-back singles in the first.
