-

August 31, 1936 - September 6, 2021

Stephen Antonio Miller passed away on September 6 at the age of 85, after holding leukemia at bay for 20 years. He was born in Upland and spent most of his life there. Steve graduated from Chaffey High School in 1954, attended Chaffey College, and graduated from UC Riverside in 1958. He went on to further education at UC Berkeley, where he earned his Ph.D. in physics. Steve worked as a research physicist for the US Navy for 40 years. He continued to conduct physics research independently and was working on a new project at the time of his death. He was the holder of numerous patents and awards, especially in the field of optics. Steve was a man of boundless curiosity and many interests, from photography to economics. He often said what a rich life he had led, going on research trips to Africa and South America with members of his family, and fun travels to Europe and Hawaii. Wherever Steve went he made friends with people in all walks of life. He loved life, and he lived it to the fullest.

Steve is survived by his wife of 63 years, Sheryl Flum Miller; their three children: Stephen Arthur Miller, Laura Miller Wilken, and Lynne Elizabeth Miller; and his beloved grandson Arthur Peterson “Pete” Miller. Steve’s family was with him in his last days and he died peacefully, knowing they would all support one another.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, friends contribute to the San Antonio Hospital Foundation or the American Red Cross, or a charity of their choice.
