Hudson, former star TE at BYU, dies

-

Gordon Hudson, an AllAmerican tight end for BYU and a college football hall of famer, died Sept. 27. He was 59.

He died in San Jose, California, the school said.

Hudson suited up for the Cougars from 198083, earning All-America honors as a junior and senior. Playing for legendary coach LaVell Edwards, he amassed 2,484 yards receiving and 22 touchdowns over his decorated career. He also helped BYU capture four Western Athletic Conference titles and earn four Holiday Bowl invitations.

Hudson still holds the NCAA record for most yards gained in a game by a tight end when he had 259 against Utah on Nov. 21, 1981. Hudson hauled in passes from such notable BYU quarterbacks as Jim McMahon, Steve Young and Robbie Bosco.

“Gordon Hudson completely reinvented the tight end position during his outstanding career at BYU,” National Football Foundation chairman Archie Manning said in a release.

Hudson was a first-round pick of Seattle in the 1984 NFL supplemental draft. He ended up playing two seasons with the Los Angeles Express in the United States Football League and one with the Seahawks.

He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2009, becoming the first non-quarterback to represent BYU as a player in the Hall of Fame.

NO. 15 COASTAL CAROLINA 52, ARKANSAS STATE 20 >> Grayson McCall threw a 99yard touchdown pass on his first attempt and the Chanticleers beat the Red Wolves on Thursday night for their 11th straight win.

McCall completed 18 of 23 passes for a career-high 365 yards and four touchdowns without an interception.

Isaiah Likely also had a big night, catching eight passes for 232 yards and four touchdowns — all career highs — and kicking the game off with the school-record 99-yarder.

Coastal Carolina (6-0, 2-0 Sun Belt) also got scoring runs of 64 yards from Reese White and 67 yards from backup quarterback Bryce Carpenter.

The Chanticleers forced a punt on Arkansas State’s game-opening drive and took over on the 1. A run up the middle went nowhere and on second down, McCall, standing in the middle of the end zone, lofted a pass to tight end Likely, who made the catch in stride just past the 20 and raced downfield untouched for the score.

The Chanticleers piled up 685 yards of total offense, holding Arkansas State (15, 0-2) to 273.
