Who do you like for California governor?
Ballots will be mailed out to registered voters next week.
Do you know who you’re going to vote for as California’s next governor?
That’s our Question of the Week for our readers.
Hard as it is to believe, it’s May 2022 already — the calendar doesn’t lie.
So the political season is certainly upon us, with Election Day, June 7, just over a month away, in the primary that in some cases will decide winners outright and in others will select a top two to face off in November.
Obviously, the gubernatorial race is not the only one on the ballot. Voters will be choosing local city council and school board members, along with county supervisors, sheriffs and in some cases district attorneys; there are legislative and other statewide races and, on the national level, congressional ones as well.
But the governor of our state, the largest and most important in the nation, is perhaps the one leader who all Californians who pay attention to politics know about and have an opinion on. What’s yours?
Is Gov. Gavin Newsom — who only last year handily faced down a recall effort, which he won in a landslide — doing a good job that is deserving of a second term in office?
Or is one of the Republicans in the race, or smaller-party candidates or independents, running a campaign that appeals to you?
Why didn’t anyone from what by now could be termed the Big Three of GOP opponents — John Cox, Kevin Faulconer or Larry Elder — step forward this time?
Has anything changed since the recall that will make Newsom more vulnerable now?
The price of gasoline, for instance, and the failure of Sacramento to bring it down by suspending the gas tax? The ongoing tragedy of homelessness in our state? The handling of the coronavirus pandemic?
Which of the main challengers to the governor has the best chance of making the top two for November? Is it longtime legislator Brian Dahle, Orange County attorney Shawn Collins, pro-nuclear activist Michael Shellenberger?
