En­sure your pa­per can be wet with­out ex­ces­sive buck­ling.

Di­lute your paint so you aren’t fill­ing up the tooth of the pa­per.

Al­low the pa­per to dry com­pletely be­fore adding pas­tel.

Do the bare min­i­mum of un­der­paint­ing, not the whole pic­ture.

Use the big­gest brush you can, this helps elim­i­nate de­tail.

Don’t fid­dle, keep it sim­ple with big ab­stract shapes and no de­tail.

Don’t use your best sable brushes. Sanded pas­tel pa­pers (they are usu­ally the wa­ter tol­er­ant ones) eat paint­brushes.
