The American Legion Auxiliary needs volunteers for various activities throughout the year, which is ideal for high school students who need service hours or adults who just want to volunteer. MEMORIAL DAY POPPIES

America Legion Auxiliary Unit 118, District 27, will be offering poppies for veterans through May 30 at Vons, Grocery and Dwayne’s Pharmacy in honor of Memorial Day, May 30.

EASTERN SIERRA YOUTH OUTDOORS

Eastern Sierra Youth Outdoors, an Eastside Sports and the Eastern Sierra Interpreti­ve Associatio­n free rock climbing and backpackin­g camp program for youth, still is accepting applicatio­ns for a trip in the backcountr­y above Bishop June 21 – 26. No experience is necessary, all needed equipment is provided for youth 13 - 18 from any community in Inyo or Mono counties are invited to apply. The program is free. CAMP JOY

The Bishop and Lone Pine Church of the Nazarene are sponsoring Camp JOY with three session for various age groups. First session, June 13-17, boys and girls leaving seventh grade and up through high school, $180; June 20-24, children leaving fourth through sixth grade, $160; June 28-20, Son Sparklers Camp, a three-day and twonight experience for children leaving second and third grade, $80. Monday, May 30 MEMORIAL DAY IN BIG PINE

The Big Pine American Legion Auxiliary Unit 457 will be hosting this year’s Memorial Day Ceremony at 11 a.m. in the Big Pine Veterans Memorial on the corner of U.S. Highway 395 and Highway 168. Inyo County Veterans Service Officer Gordon Greene will conduct the POW/MIA Remembranc­e. The community is welcome to help distribute grave flags on the headstones of veterans starting at 8:30 a.m. at Crocker Cemetery then onto Woodsman Cemetery. The Big Pine Cemetery District has more than 175 veterans, including 15 from the Civil War.

MEMORIAL DAY IN BISHOP

The VFW Post 8988 and Auxiliary are hosting a Memorial Day service at E. Line Cemetery at 11 a.m. The organizati­ons are seeking volunteers to help with placing flags on the graves of veterans at the Pioneer and E. Line St. cemeteries. For more informatio­n, call Cheryl Underhill, (760) 920-0106.

Sunday, June 5 WATER-WISE GARDENING

The UCCE master gardeners of Inyo and Mono counties host a Sunday seminar on water-wise gardening, including how to assess a site and get started, from 10 - 11:30 a.m. at Chalfant Big Trees Nursery. There will be free handouts and an optional visit to Harold’s Chalfant garden. Bring a hat, chair and a drink.
