BUHS JV mathletes crush their first meet this year
Bishop’s top score adds up to victory in Tehachapi
The JV mathletes team at Bishop Union High School was thrilled to start its season at Tehachapi on Oct. 5.
Each mathlete faced 10 problems and they absolutely rocked each and every one of them, earning 39 points total (compared to the second-place team’s 18 points), and placed first with pride.
This year, the JV mathletes team is jam-packed with 15 students. Eight of them are talented sophomores: Alyssa Buchholz, Cooper Beard, Jodie Bedore, Ellie Crall, Hunter Dermody, Elias Downard, Sydney Norcross, and Gabrielle Veenker.
The seven freshmen, starting their exciting journey as BUHS mathletes, are Madison Benninger, Blake Braaten, Bryce Cokeley, Caleb Fitt, Teagan Orr, Ben Rowan, and Sydney Wilson.
Fourteen mathletes traveled to the Tehachapi meet two weeks ago to compete against four other schools. Four of them took home individual ribbons for their high scores; Alyssa Buchholz and Cooper Beard earned nine points each and first-place ribbons, and Jodie Bedore and Elias Downard earned seven points each and secondplace ribbons.
The Bishop team was the only group at the meet able to complete a complex, multi-step team problem and collectively earned three points toward their high score of 39 points.
During the fifth round, the mathletes were given this problem:
The supplement of an angle is four times that of its complement. Find the measure of the angle.
“This is a very young team but they can pack a punch!” said BUHS math teacher and mathletes coach Deedee Buchholz. “This wasn’t just another win, it was a take down! A score of 39 points is extremely high especially when you compare it to the second- and thirdplace teams holding 18 and 16 points. Congratulations mathletes, you are doing awesome!”
This was the first JV meet of four, and the team is thrilled to travel to Boron to compete again on Nov. 2. The varsity team travelled to Silver Valley on Oct. 19, so be on the lookout for an article on their meet.
