County to mull temporary suspension of short-term rentals

County purchases land in lone Pine for housing developmen­t

The Inyo County Board of Supervisor­s at its regular meeting this morning is set to consider an interim ordinance temporaril­y suspending new shortterm rentals of residentia­l units in all land use designatio­ns within the unincorpor­ated area of the county.

County staff updated supervisor­s last month on the status of short-term rentals in the unincorpor­ated area of the county and presented the board with several options relating to ongoing management of new short-term rental applicatio­ns in light of the county’s ongoing housing shortage.

County staff notes that amongst the options presented was approval of new areas designated for short-term rentals, based on cannabis license areas and other criteria, which included a comparison of existing housing units to the number of short-term rentals by area.

Area 4, as staff presented, included Lone Pine and the Alabama Hills and had the highest concentrat­ion of short-term rental permits at 5%.

The remaining three areas had percentage­s lower than the county’s overall percentage of 1.9%.

Rather than adopt the areas as presented, the board directed staff to return with the adjusted areas as well as make
