My best friend got a boyfriend and now I barely see her!

-

Q:

My best friend of five years got a boyfriend seven months ago and now we hardly ever hang out. I understand that they want to spend time together, but I miss her and feel so alone. What do I do? I don’t know how to tell her without upsetting her since she seems happier spending time with him. — Braden, 15

A:

Hi Braden! In situations like this, honesty is the way to

go. Just think about it: You were able to express how you’re feeling to us, why not tell it to your best friend? It’s not like you want her to break up with her boyfriend, you just miss her! Tell her that you want to spend more time together just the two of you. You’ve been friends for five years, so your bond is tight enough to have that honest conversation. Be straight up and tell her that you’re happy for her and her relationship, but the time away from her stings. Sometimes, when people get into relationships, they don’t even realize they’re spending less time with everyone else and we bet that’s what is happening here. Just keep in mind that she can’t spend as much time with you as she did when she was single, but that’s nothing to take personally. You two are best friends for a reason!
