My friend’s girl-friend treats him poorly!

Q: My guy friend just started dating this girl and she treats him so badly. I hate having to watch him go through it. I’m not sure how to confront him about it. What do you think I should do? — Kathryn, 16

A: You’re in a tricky situation, Kathryn! We think the best thing you can do is approach your friend when it’s just the two of you and ask him if he’s happy. Tell him you care about him and just wants what’s best. If he tells you he isn’t happy, ask what you can do to help. If he assures you that he’s happy, (even if you don’t believe him) there’s nothing more you can do. Unfortunately, as much as you hate it, sometimes people have to go through these things and come to conclusions on their own, no matter what their friends think. If his girlfriend really treats him as badly as you think, he’ll eventually break things off. All you can do in the meantime is be a good friend to him!
