Rams place four, Buffs two
Wednesday brought great recognition for Logan County spor ts. In addition to CHSAA rewarding 12 players with All-state honors, the Plains League unveiled their annual All-conference football team. As expected, Logan County was well represented.
The Merino Rams had four players selected to the All-conference team while the Caliche Buffaloes had two. Considering state champion Sedgwick County is a member of the Plains League, that’s quite the accomplishment.
We’ll start with the Rams, who had three selections on the Allstate team. All three of them (Andrew Frank, Trent Elliot, and Derek Alber) were all on the All- Conference team as well.
The honors were well deser ved. Elliot was an outstanding two-way player this year, rushing for 453 yards and 4 touchdowns on offense while compiling 128 tackles, 1 interception, 4 pass deflections, and 1 forced fumble on defense.
Frank was stellar on both sides of the ball as well. The senior for 971 yards and 8 touchdowns on of fense while adding 75 tackles, 1 INT, 8 PD’S, 3 FR’S on defense. His presence was missed dearly in the Rams’ semifinal loss to Sanford.
Alber was deservedly placed on the team as well. Alber conrushed tributed 12 catches for 256 yards and 3 TD’S on offense and 45 tackles, 1 sack, and 9 INT’S on the season.
The four th Ram on the All-conference team was quarterback Deacon Trenkle. The standout junior was snubbed from the Allstate team, but more than earned his spot on the All-conference team. The stud completed 18-of44 passes for 297 yards and 2 touchdowns, but it was his rushing that set him apart. Trenkle rushed for 942 yards and 15 touchdowns on the year. He was just as excellent on defense, putting together 71 tackles and 5 pass deflections.
It wasn’t just the Merino show, however. Caliche placed two players on the All-conference team in Traevin Jones and Seth Marick.
Jones, a senior, was an honorable mention All-state selection. The only returning starter from 2019 put together 274 yards and 3 scores while adding 46 tackles, 1 TFL, and 2 FR’S.
Marick, a sophomore, completed 9-of-33 passes for 110 yards, 1 TD and 2 INT’S. He added 86 rushing yards and 1 TD as well as 16 tackles and 1 INT on defense.
Congrats to all of the selections!
