FLEMING CONTINUES POSTSEASON RUN

No. 2 Wildcats dominant against No. 7 Genoa-hugo Pirates Friday

- By Alissa Noe

Very few teams had been able to touch Fleming football through the regular season this fall, and the Wildcats aren’t done yet.

Following a 66-30 thumping of No. 7 Genoa-hugo on Friday night, the second-seeded Wildcats earned their spot in the semifinals of the 6-man state playoffs. They left no doubt they would get there.

Throughout their contest against the Pirates, senior quarterback Braylen Feather put the ball in the air six successful times and collected 108 yards and two touchdowns in the process. He also threw two interceptions. His favorite target, his brother Blake, caught the ball twice for runs of 36 and 16 yards and hit the end zone on one of those catches. Senior Kolten Houser accounted for the other receiving TDS but caught the ball just once for a 19-yard gain.

Blake Feather, also a senior, took the reins of the run game by taking the ball 205 yards downfield and collecting a single score. Houser proved much more efficient on the ground, running the ball 119 yards for five scores. He also erased one of Braylen Feather’s with an interception of his own.

That dominant performance now sets them up for a much tougher matchup with No. 3 Granada, who forfeited a contest against the Wildcats earlier in the year. The Bobcats enter the semis with an 8-3 record — 8-2 if you take away that forfeit — and an incredibly tough schedule to get there.

If the Wildcats want to send them packing, they’ll have to keep an eye on four strong opponents. Quarterback Brandon Gonzalez already boasts 1,685 passing yards and 29 touchdowns but hasn’t been that great on the run.

The Bobcats certainly know how to take charge of the ground game, however, with solid performances from Maddox Coleman (977 rushing yards), Jonus Guevara (689 rushing yards) and John Hainer (510 rushing yards).

Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. on Saturday at Fleming High School.
