How do I decline the pass and the $29 charge from my registration total starting in January 2023?

The pass fee will be included in vehicle registration totals to make purchasing and investing in Colorado’s outdoors an easy step during the annual vehicle registration process.

However, residents will have the option to decline the pass. You can decline or subtract (opt out) the cost of the pass when you register your vehicle with the DMV online, through a kiosk, through mail-in options or with a customer service representative in-office.

Q

Where will the Keep Colorado Wild Pass grant me access?

A

The pass will provide access to all 43 Colorado State parks and other participating public lands yet to be determined. The pass does not include access to Sate Wildlife Areas or Shooting Complexes, which have separate pass/ day fees and does not replace camping or fishing passes.

Q

What if my current $80-$120 Annual State Park Pass is still valid when I’m eligible to purchase a $29 Keep Colorado Wild Pass during my 2023 vehicle registration?

ABecause vehicle registrations happen throughout the year, there will be situations where current Colorado Parks and Wildlife annual park pass customers will have overlapping annual passes. To address these issues, CPW has approved refund options that will cover the time between when a current annual pass expires and when a vehicle registration is due.

The refunded amount will be based on a flat, prorated refund structure. The prorated amount will be based on the price of the original pass divided by 12 months and rounded up to the nearest dollar. The refund amount is based on the number of remaining months, with no refund for passes that had been used for nine months or more. Residents will have 60 days after the Keep Colorado Wild Pass purchase date to file for a refund.

QIf I was issued a CPW specialty park pass or DMV specialty vehicle plate eligible for state park admission, do I have to purchase a Keep Colorado Wild Pass during my vehicle registration?

ANo. Your CPW issued specialty park pass (Columbine, Centennial, Blue Spruce, Independence, Volunteer or Military Pass) already authorizes you free or lower-cost entrance to all Colorado state parks when in your possession.

Colorado residents with Colorado Disabled Veterans or Purple Heart license plates may access Colorado state parks for free. These plates are given through the Division of Motor Vehicles. The veteran must be present in the vehicle.

QAWhere will the money go?

Funds generated from pass sales will be directed toward achieving ten goals to focus on future investments in public lands, conservation, outdoor recreation, and wildlife management.

Colorado’s great outdoors and wildlife are among our most treasured resources. They enhance our quality of life, drive our economy and represent the fabric of our state. Your purchase will support conservation and outdoor recreation in Colorado by helping fund state park improvement projects, local search and rescue programs, avalanche awareness, wildlife conservation and expand educational opportunities.
