HAIR SALON MEETS CLOTHING BOUTIQUE AT NEW SWEETGRASS

-

Get your hair done and shop for some cute women’s clothes all at the same place. You can do both at a new business in Sterling, Sweetgrass Boutique Studio.

Owner Shayna Samber, who is an Aveda-trained stylist, has been in the hairstylist industry for 15 years, but she has never owned her own salon before. She and her husband, Brett, grew up in Sterling and are both Sterling High School graduates, but had since left to go elsewhere and then when some unexpected family stuff happened they decided to move their family back here last August. Contemplating what she should do for work, Samber decided to turn a dream of hers into reality by opening her own business.

“I always had a dream of having my own salon, so we started looking for spaces and I fell in love with this space and felt like Sterling could use a really cute salon,” she said.

Sweetgrass is located at 120 N. Fourth Street. Samber chose the building due to its location downtown and because she loved how much character it has given that it is an older historic building.

“I love the industrial look to the ceiling and the exposed brick was what I fell in love with; it has great lighting,” she said.

The building was the former home of the Tenth and Mae women’s boutique, which still has a presence there. When Samber found out about Lyndsay Weingardt, owner of Tenth and Mae, closing her storefront, she asked her if she would be interested in collaborating with her and Weingardt jumped at the chance.

“She helps me fill the space with quite a bit of clothes,” Samber said.

Along with Tenth and Mae clothing items, the boutique studio will also be selling jewelry and they have a full line of R+CO, clean, high performing and affordable hair care products.

“I just wanted to create a space where people could shop

for product and clothes in the same space and have a great experience at the same time,” Samber said.

The salon has four workstations, with three filled and one still open. They offer all of the typical salon hair services, with stylists specializing in cutting and color and they also offer minimal waxing services — no body waxes but they will do eyebrow waxes.

“I wanted to create a team-based salon that was super comforting and welcoming to everyone,” Samber said.

At this time she plans to try and have the boutique studio open Monday through Friday and some Saturdays by appointment. The salon does take walkins, but Samber stressed it is mostly appointment-based.

Future plans include hosting some weekend events in collaboration with Tenth and Mae and possibly some sidewalk sales in the summer.

While Sweetgrass has had its doors open since the beginning of January, the new business is planning a grand opening celebration Saturday, Feb. 11, from 3 to 7 p.m. They will be offering 15% off of R+CO products and Tenth and Mae apparel and they will also have “permanent” jewelry available for purchase; the 14-karat gold bracelets don’t have a traditional clasp and are instead welded shut, so they are “permanent.” so to speak. Plus, there will be a door prize giveaway featuring a basket full of R+CO products, little goodies from Tenth and Mae and a gift card for services at Sweetgrass, and everyone who enters the giveaway will get a ticket for free beer at The Hot Spot.
