Sterling track shows off at Windsor invite

- By Alissa Noe

In a meet that welcomed teams both large and small including, arguably, the state’s best high school track and field team in Niwot, Sterling’s squad showed off.

The Tigers enjoyed a number of top-10 marks at Windsor’s Murray Kula Invitational

on Monday.

Junior Hunter Diamond kicked it off with sixth place in the 100-meter dash, after he crossed the finish line in 11.35 seconds. The winner, Windsor’s Mikey Munn, beat him by just 0.35 seconds. He achieved eighth place in the 200 with a 23.32.

The boys’ 4×100 relay missed out on the gold by a mere 0.31 seconds and instead settled for silver with a time of 44.85. The 4×200 quartet made up for it by winning its event at 1 minute, 33.32 seconds. The 4×400 team finished in the top 10 — albeit, last place — after recording a time of 4:04.30.

Junior Carter Jaeger led a trio of Tigers in the long jump as the only one to make the podium. He flung himself 20 feet, 4 inches, which was good enough to land him at seventh. Senior Wesley Knuppel one-upped him in the triple jump, as he placed fifth with leaps that led him to 41—1.5.

Freshman Luke Peterson managed 10th place in the pole vault after clearing the eight-foot bar. The ladies’ 800 sprint medley relay finished last in its race, but that was still good enough for sixth with a 2:11.75 mark. Their 4×800, likewise, finished last as well as fifth place at 13:08.21.

Senior Alyssa Slade hit a 4—10 mark in the high jump, which sat her squarely in sixth place. Senior Audrey Reeves squeaked onto the podium with ninth in the triple jump, which she achieved with a few leaps that landed her at 32—2.

Senior Elizabeth Miller and junior Courtney Canada showed out in pole vault, securing fifth and sixth place, as Miller cleared 9—6 and Canada surpassed 9—0. Junior Vanessa Harty rounded out the Tigers’ top10 representation with 10th in shot put (29—11).
