Caliche baseball wins three straight

- By Alissa Noe

Caliche baseball sure knows how to bounce back from a slump.

Following three straight losses to open the season, the Buffaloes utilized a doubleheader against Peetz last Wednesday to not only get their first two wins on the board, but to springboard themselves to a third straight victory against Wiggins.

The Buffaloes opened their first game, a 10-9 win, against the Bulldogs by playing a bit of catchup, as Peetz scored first in the top of the first and second innings before Caliche was able to put a run on the board. The Bulldogs continued to out-pace the Buffaloes through the end of the fifth, at which point they held a 6-4 advantage.

Both offenses found a little extra juice in the sixth, scoring seven runs in all, but the Buffaloes claimed a slight advantage by driving in four runs in the bottom of that inning. They utilized that late surge to keep Peetz scoreless in the top of the seventh, then put together a walk-off win, scoring two runs to end the game.

The second contest proved much less exciting. Caliche won 24-14, thanks in large part to the 17 runs they sent home in the fifth and sixth innings alone. In that contest, senior Ayden Ring led the way with four RBIS as senior Chance Mitchell, freshman Avery Bell, senior Joey Vergilio and junior Clinton Rockwell each added two more.

Three days later, they pulled out another thriller with a 7-6 decision over Wiggins.

Once again, Wiggins gained the first advantage with a single run in the first inning, but Caliche found its fire at the plate much sooner, knocking in three runs in the bottom of the second, then continued to maintain that lead by the end of each inning. They didn’t need the bottom of the seventh to close out the contest.

The Buffaloes improved to 3-3 with the winning streak, and will hit the diamond next at Wray on Thursday at 4 p.m.
