Fleming girls impress at Yuma Invitational
Over the past few years, Fleming’s female athletes have developed a habit of strong performances across a variety of sports. Track, it seems, has been no different.
In just their second meet of the year, the ladies put on a show once again with 10 top-10 finishes at the 56th annual Yuma Bill Kalb Invitational, which was held earlier this week. Sophomore Emoree Lousberg kicked it off with seventh in the 1,600-meter run, during which she paced herself to 7 minutes, 8.32 seconds.
The girls 4×100 relay squad kept the ball rolling with ninth place as they collectively ended with a time of 57.96 seconds. The 4×800 team performed even better, claiming the bronze in its race after clocking in at 12:34.21.
Sophomore Ashley Bornhoft elevated the team through the high jump after she mastered the bronze with a clearance of 4 feet, 8 inches. Sophomore Brooklyn
Schaefer achieved the same feat in the long jump, placing third with a distance of 14 feet even, then flew to 13th in the triple jump with a 28—2.5 mark. Senior Madisyn Serrato tried out her luck in the pole vault, and still made the podium through a four-way tie for ninth despite tough competition. She successfully cleared 7—4.
Freshman Hadley Stull, while missing out on the podium, still put together a solid landing in the long jump, where she tied for 14th by earning a 12—5.25.
Sophomore Jared Betley took on the leading role for the boys’ side of the aisle, first enjoying third place in the 1,600 (5:24.07) before outdoing himself in the 3,200, where he recorded a time of 12:05.31, which handed him the silver.
Junior Travis Johnson reserved his talents for the field events, where he leaped to seventh in the high jump (5—6). Senior Jared Betley squeaked his way onto the podium with ninth in the shot put, after he threw the shot 38—0.25.
