Data reveals most popular Halloween candy in Illinois

- Mike Kramer

With Halloween rapidly approaching, children throughout the United States are choosing or putting the finishing touches on their costumes while adults are stocking up on candy.

What kind of candy will be a treat for the little ghosts and goblins? And what kind of candy might get a homeowner’s trees festooned with toilet paper?

Anyone looking for a “trick” in exchange for their “treats” should absolutely buy up all the Circus Peanuts they can get their hands on.

According to candystore.com’s annual survey, these orange, peanut-shaped sugar nuggets are the most reviled Halloween candy in the United States. Candy corn, which displaced circus peanuts for this dubious honor in 2021, is the nation’s second-most disliked candy, followed by Necco Wafers, which are steadily growing in unpopularity.

For homeowners who prefer their windows un-soaped and would rather just get bright smiles and heartfelt thanks for their candy, candystore.com also conducted a survey of the most popular Halloween candies by state.

In Illinois, the number one answer is Sour Patch Kids, which is also the favorite Halloween treat in New York, Maine, Texas and Nebraska. The state’s first and second runners-up are Kit Kat and Starburst, respectively. Illinois’ affinity for Sour Patch Kids is something of a departure from the nation’s beaten path. The country as a whole clearly likes chocolate, because it features prominently in all three of the top candies in the United States. Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups are the undisputed king of Halloween treats, according to candystore.com. M&Ms and Snickers held their second and third-place positions from 2022.
