Gerald “Jerry” Jungck
PEORIA - Gerald “Jerry” Frederick Jungck, 94, of Peoria, Illinois, went to the Lord peacefully on
Thursday November 23, 2023, under Hospice care at Manor Court at Liberty Village in Peoria.
Jerry was born to Rev. Frederick Jungck and Clara (Reinsch) Jungck of St. Francis,
Kansas, on March 1, 1929. He married
Helen “Ann” Marie Anundson on January
29, 1959, in Madison, Wisconsin. His wife, Ann, preceded him in death on April 22, 2020. He is survived by his children, Eric (Sandy) Jungck of Sag
Harbor, New York; his daughter, Julie Rogy (Mike
Clark) of Peoria, Illinois; his four grandchildren, Brittany (Charlie) Walker of Peoria, Bethany Rogy (Kody Kanaga) of Metamora, Illinois, Hannah Jungck of Charleston, South Carolina, and Caroline Jungck of Sag Harbor, New York; and his two great-grandchildren, Kage Kanaga and Lucy Walker.
Jerry graduated from Milwaukee Lutheran High School in 1947. He earned a B.A. degree in Mathematics from Wartburg College and then served a twoyear tour in the army in Alaska during the Korean conflict. He obtained his Master’s degree in Mathematics from the University of Wisconsin in 1959, at which time he began his teaching career at Bradley University in Peoria, Illinois. Jerry then earned his PHD in Mathematics in 1976 from the State University of New York at Binghamton during a four-year leave from Bradley.
Dr. Jungck taught at Bradley University for 51 years, retiring in May of 2011 as Professor Emeritus. In addition to his teaching, he served Bradley in a variety of capacities, most notably the Chair of the Mathematics Department for 2 terms from 1985 to 1995, and the Bradley faculty representative at The Illinois Math and Science Academy (IMSA). Jerry was deeply involved with his mathematical research, publishing regularly in the subject area of
“Fixed Point Theory.” In this context, he served as Associate Editor for the research journals, The International Journal of Mathematics & Mathematical Sciences and The Journal of Mathematical Analysis & Applications. Bradley recognized his publication and creative production by awarding him the 1983 Samuel Rothberg Professional Excellence Award, and a Caterpillar Inc. Professorship in 2007. In 2005, the Mathematics Department formally recognized his Bradley Office for his “distinguished service to his students, The Mathematics Department, and the University.” Jerry’s biography was published in the ninth edition of Who’s Who Among American Teachers in 2004. And for recreation and restoration, he was known to inhabit the racquetball courts at Bradley’s Haussler Hall and to play duplicate bridge with his wife Ann and close friends.
Other than Bradley and his family, his major involvement and commitment was to his church, Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church of Peoria. He had served as President of the Congregation and Chair of the Board of Elders. Jerry had been an Elder of the Church for over 30 years. But most precious of all to Jerry was time with his wife, Ann; his children, Eric and Julie; and their extended families. Jerry’s influence and deep love for his family will forever live in our hearts.
The family is extremely grateful for the personal and loving care provided by both Transitions Hospice and Manor Court at Liberty Village.
A private family visitation and Lutheran Service will be held at The Wright & Salmon Mortuary Chapel, immediately followed by a family burial service at Lutheran Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church of Peoria, Illinois.
Friends and family are encouraged to log onto www.wrightandsalmon. com to sign the online guestbook.
