Finishing Materials & Instructions
• Bolster form
• Coordinating cotton fabric
• Coordinating piping
• Coordinating sewing thread
• Compass • Marking pen
• Straight pins
• Sewing machine
Note: Use 1/2" seam allowance throughout.
Press stitched piece from reverse side, straightening as much as possible. Trim stitched piece to 1" from stitching around all sides.
Measure diameter across end of bolster form and add 1". Use compass and marking pen to draw two matching circles onto wrong side of fabric. These will be the end pieces. Make a single mark in the same place on edge of each circle. Set aside.
Center trimmed stitched piece on bolster form. Measure width from stitched piece to end of bolster form and add 1". This should be the same measurement on both sides of stitched piece. Cut two fabric rectangles to this measurement by the height of the trimmed stitched piece (approximately 53/8").
Place one fabric rectangle onto the stitched piece, right sides together and aligning left edges. Sew together along left edge. Repeat process for right-hand side of stitched piece with remaining fabric rectangle to complete the design unit.
Center the design unit on bolster. For bolster-cover body, measure around circumference of bolster starting and stopping at edges of design unit. Add 1" to measurement. Cut a piece of fabric to this measurement by the same width as the design unit.
Place body piece and design unit right sides together, aligning top edge of the design unit with one side of the body piece; pin to hold. Sew together along top edge.
Place other end of body piece along bottom of the design unit and sew together, leaving a long opening in the middle for insertion of bolster form. You should now have a cylinder the same length as the bolster form.
Place piping along edge of one circle end piece, starting and stopping at mark, and pin in place. Sew together. Clip seam allowance. Repeat with second end piece.
Place one end piece and the cylinder right sides together, aligning piping seam with the seam that runs along the bottom of the design unit. Pin in place. Sew together. Trim seam allowance to reduce bulk. Repeat with remaining end piece.
Turn bolster cover right side out and insert bolster form. Turn in seam allowance and hand-sew opening closed.
