Finishing Materials & Instructions

• Two 21/2" x 41/2" pieces red cotton

print fabric • 41/2"-square piece iron- on fusible

interfacing • 10" length 1/4"-wide red rickrack • Dried balsam fir (for stuffing) from

Paine Products Inc.

Press stitched piece from reverse side, straightening as much as possible. Trim stitched piece to 41/2" square, centering design and creating an even border all around. Following the manufacturer’s directions, apply the fusible interfacing to wrong side of stitched piece.

To make backing, place the red fabric pieces together, right sides facing, and pin along one long edge. Using a 1/4" seam allowance, sew pieces together 1" from each outer edge (the unstitched 21/2" opening in the center will be used for turning and filling the ornament). Open backing piece and place facedown on ironing board; press seam open and turn back same amount of fabric (1/4") along both sides of unstitched center segment. ( Finished backing piece should measure 41/2" square.)

Pin stitched piece and backing together, right sides facing, and sew around all edges with 1/4" seam allowance. Trim corners and turn ornament ride side out through opening in backing. Fold rickrack in half and sew to back of ornament for hanger. Fill ornament with dried balsam fir and whipstitch opening closed. Note: Take care that the finished ornament does not get wet as water may cause the pine balsam to bleed through the fabrics.
