Finishing Materials & Instructions

• Two 5" x 6" and four 4" x 6" pieces

cotton fabric

• Two 5" x 7" pieces low-loft batting • Two 7" lengths ribbon

• Eight 21/2" x 37/8" pieces stiff cardstock • Tacky glue

• Tacky glue spray

Press stitched pieces from reverse side, straightening as much as possible. Trim both pieces to 2" from stitching on all sides.

Unit A (stitched front flap): Lightly spray one side of one piece of cardstock with tacky glue spray. Place tacky side onto one piece batting. Trim batting edges even with cardstock.

Center one stitched piece over batting side of batting/cardstock unit, folding excess linen to back and mitering corners. Use tacky glue to secure linen to back of cardstock. Set aside; allow to dry.

Unit B: Spray another piece of cardstock with tacky glue spray. Center and place one 5" x 6" piece cotton fabric wrong side down onto tacky side of cardstock, folding excess fabric to back; glue to secure. Mark center bottom of back for ribbon stop placement. Set aside.

Unit C (hinge flap with stop): Spray another cardstock piece with tacky glue spray. Place one 4" x 6" piece cotton fabric wrong side down on tacky side of cardstock, leaving 2" of fabric protruding at top edge. This will serve as hinge flap. Glue remaining three sides to back of cardstock, leaving hinge unglued. Mark bottom center of back opposite of hinge. Glue 2" of ribbon onto center mark leaving remaining ribbon off hinged unit.

Unit D: Spray another piece of cardstock with tacky glue spray. Center and place a 4" x 6" piece cotton fabric wrong side down onto tacky side of cardstock. Fold extra fabric to back and glue in place.

Cover back of Unit C, including ribbon end, with tacky glue. Place Unit D onto Unit C wrong sides together with hinge and ribbon exiting opposite ends. Press together, aligning edges, and allow to dry.

Final assembly: Place hinged Unit

C/ D flat on work surface. Place Unit B right side down onto assembled Unit C/ D, aligning edges. Glue raw end of hinge fabric onto back of Unit B. Glue 2" of ribbon to opposite end of Unit B where center mark appears. Make sure ribbon will lie flat when unit is opened to stand upright.

Spray wrong side of Unit B with tacky glue spray, covering hinge and ribbon end. Place Unit A on top of Unit B, wrong sides together. Press together, aligning edges. Place heavy book on assembled item and allow to dry.

Repeat process for second stitched piece with remaining supplies.
