New board members for Hazel Hurst Water Company

- By Theresa Auriemmo Special to the Republican

On April 14 a meeting was held at the Hamlin Township VFD for the Hazel Hurst Water Company.

Newly appointed members are Brad Himes for president, Gene Himes Jr. for vice president, Sherri Swanson for treasurer, and Lisa Johnson for secretary.

Sherri Swanson said, " On March 13th there was an urgent meeting held at the firehall to appoint new board members because the former members resigned. The water hasn't been potable in over a year because of the manganese in the water.

"That following Monday we had a 9 a.m. meeting with DEP regarding the water situation and where they stood on the issue and what they were expecting from the previous board members but weren't getting anywhere.

"Also in the midst of all this, we had to hire a licensed person, and Brett Morgan to manage the system and chemicals.

"The water system is currently operating in the red. We have some big changes to make. The first change is to get the community of Hazel Hurst good water and that doesn't come cheap. We have been working with DEP, Hamlin Township Supervisors. The meeting we are having is to inform the public as to what has been going on previously and what our plans are for the future."

A drilling test will be done off Dewey Avenue. Hazel Hurst Water Company is hoping to have results by the end of the month.

Hazel Hurst Water will be applying for grants to help build a new treatment system hopefully by August.

Rates have not changed since 1998.

A total of forty-four customers were informed of the meeting by going door to door. Nine customers came to the meeting. Letters will be sent to customers to inform them of the progress.
