- Keith Reigel Staff Writer

The Kane Boys Basketball team found themselves in a dog fight against a very scrappy Port Allegany Gators team. Even though Port has had very little practice time since they were just in the State Semi-finals in football. They kept pressure on Kane by getting almost all their points in the first half within 8-feet of the basket.

The first half Kane was able to connect on six 3-pointers to keep them with that slight lead. Kane led Port in scoring in each period but the third. Kane led by one after the first quarter, by two at the half and by one after three periods. It was the fourth period when Kane was able to close out the win. Port was able to only manage one big three by Noah Archer and two free throws from Braylon Button in the final stanza. Kane took advantage of their hustle plays and got Port in the 1-1 with 5:27 left in the game. They hit 5-8 free throws in the fourth period with Senior leader Landon Darr going 4-4 to help seal the victory.

It was a great game to watch with both teams hustling all over the court. “We kept our poise and was able to bang with them underneath and kept our own on the boards with picking up loss balls. Ricky

Zampogna had another big game finishing with a game high 22 points.

“We need to work a little more on our offense and get a little more fluid with our plays and I think we will be alright in the long run,” said Coach Cory Darr. “To pick up a win like this knowing that it wasn't one of your better games is big.”

Port Allegany won the Junior Varsity game 51-38. Phinn Chamberlain and Brock Wensel led Kane with 9 points apiece. Ben Wilson and Isaiah Smith chipped in with 6 each and Dustyn Schreckengost and Evan Anderson tallied 4.

Kane returns to action Friday when they travel to St. Marys to take on the always tough Elk County Catholic Crusaders. Junior Varsity action is scheduled to start at 6 p.m. with the varsity to follow.
