Remembering Lieutenant Commander Gary Anderson

- By Theresa Auriemmo

KANE - In 2023, a significant milestone was observed, the 50th anniversary of the prisoners of war from the Vietnam conflict. In commemoration of this solemn event, the Veterans of Foreign War Post 1132 displayed their unwavering commitment by donating a memorial Flagpole to the Kane Area School District, dedicated to the memory of Lieutenant Commander Gary Anderson.

Born in Kane, Pennsylvania, in 1942, Lieutenant Commander Anderson's story is one of courage and sacrifice. Serving as a Radar Intercept Officer aboard the USS Kitty Hawk, he, along with his pilot, was shot down over North Vietnam on April 24, 1967, and subsequently taken prisoner. For 2,117 days, Lieutenant

Commander Anderson endured the hardships of captivity, finally regaining his freedom on March 14, 1973.

After his release, Lieutenant Commander Anderson continued to serve, becoming a Naval Aviator in March 1975. Tragically, his dedication to duty led to the ultimate sacrifice. On June 21, 1976, during a training flight in Miramar, California, he lost his life. Today, he rests in peace at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Kane.

The memorial Flagpole, donated by VFW Post 1132, stands tall as a symbol of remembrance and gratitude for Lieutenant Commander Gary Anderson's service. It serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by those who fought valiantly during the Vietnam War, contributing to the enduring

legacy of a hero from Kane, Pennsylvania."

The letter given to the VFW said, “On behalf of the Kane Area School District, we would like to thank you for your dedication and service to your community and your country. We would also like to thank Post 1132

for their generous contribution of the Gary Anderson Memorial Flagpole that has been installed at the high school athletic facility and was dedicated on August 26, 2023.

As a token of our appreciation for the flagpole, the Kane Area School District would

like to present the VFW with an honorary varsity letter and certificate. Earning a varsity letter comes with much sacrifice for student athletes and participants. This varsity letter represents not only our gratitude for

the gift of the memorial flagpole but also represents the sacrifices you have all made to ensure that the United States of America is a better place for generations to come.

Thank you for your continued service.”
