National Library Week:

Mayor Delivers Proclamation to library

- By Andy Mckowan

KANE—BEN Franklin laid the first brick that led to the lending library system that is so common across American cities today. Back then, books were something that only the wealthy or fortunate could access and even Franklin’s system wasn’t without a cost.

Today, it’s hard to imagine not being able to visit the local library and check out a book full of knowledge at no cost. This week, National Library Week, is intended to remind us of all the possibilities that are given to us as part of today’s library system.

This week, Kane’s Mayor Brandy Schimp visited the Friends’ Memorial Public Library to present the National Library Week Proclamation. It lists the role of libraries and describes the sentiment that the week of recognition aims to instill.

One excerpt reads, “Libraries are an essential public good and fundamental institutions in democratic societies, working to improve society, protect the right to education and literacy, and promote the free exchange of information and ideas for all.”

The proclamation also said, “Libraries are treasured institutions that preserve our collective heritage and knowledge, safeguarding both physical and digital resources for present and future generations. Libraries, librarians, and library workers are joining library supporters and advocates across the nation to celebrate National Library Week.”

The mayor made the week official with, “Now, therefore, be it resolved that I, Brandon R. Schimp, Mayor of the Borough of Kane, proclaim National Library Week, April 7-13, 2024. During this week, I encourage all residents to visit their library and celebrate the adventures and opportunities they unlock for us every day.”

Friends’ Memorial Public Library offers access to almost 16,000 titles including large print books, local history, and a dedicated children’s section with STEM toys. They are part of a local network of libraries, meaning your library card also gets you access to 17 libraries in the area, with a total of 264,444 titles in the network. Not to mention the near infinite resources available online through Pennsylvania’s e-library, Powerlibrary.org.

This year they have expanded their hours this year and continues to offer children’s, teen and adult programs at low or no cost to its patrons. They provide a summer reading program,

book club, knitting club, and all types of special events.

Recently, the library had presentations from a local couple who went on safari in Africa and another from an enthusiastic storm chaser.

The local library offers services that many people would not have access to otherwise — like free wifi internet access, computers, copy machines, faxing and scanning services.

Each year to provide these services, they receive $12,243 from the PA state government, and $10,000 from the Borough of Kane. Anything beyond that comes from grants, donations, and fundraisers.

The Friends' Memorial Public Library Board of Directors recently sent their annual funding request letter out which said, ”We are hopeful for the support of our community in reaching our financial goals to be able to offer these services. Our library relies heavily on memorials, donations, and fundraisers. Your financial support is vital in order to maintain our wide variety of services. The Friends' Memorial Public Library is a 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization. Your donation is fully tax deductible. Thank you for your generosity and support .”

Friends’ Memorial Public Library is located at 230 Chase St. in Kane. Call (814) 837-7010 or visit www. friendslibrary.org for more information.
