BBB advice for navigating flood recovery and water damage

CARNEGIE – Record-breaking rainfall throughout Western Pa. has caused largescale flooding and property damage for consumers and businesses. In the aftermath of a storm, many people are likely to experience flooded basements, leaky roofs, debris and even mold related issues. Though quick action can minimize disastrous effects on homes and businesses, the Better Business Bureau is urging people to take care when choosing businesses and contractors to help with the cleanup work.

“Dealing with the aftermath of storm damage is a stressful, often expensive experience that people want to resolve immediately,” says Caitlin Driscoll, public relations director of the Better Business Bureau of Western Pa. “Unfortunately, with any natural disaster, unscrupulous people will look to take advantage of those who have been impacted and are not sure where to turn for help.”

To help property owners navigate the recovery and restoration process, BBB offers these tips:

•Contact your insurance company and inquire about policy coverage and specific filing requirements to initiate the claim process. If your home, business and/or vehicle was damaged, document the damage by taking pictures or videos if possible.

•Recognize the difference between flood insurance and homeowners insurance. Flood damage is typically caused by water that has been on the ground before damaging your home. Water damage occurs when water causes damage before it comes in contact with the ground (broken pipes, a leaky roof, etc). These claims would likely be covered by homeowners insurance.

•Do what you can to mitigate further damage. Dry out and disinfect impacted areas as soon as possible to help prevent mold. If you have concerns about wet carpet or rugs, start running fans and dehumidifiers. Consult an expert to see if carpet, rugs and furnishings can be salvaged. Don’t make any permanent changes to your property until you get approval from your insurance provider.

•Always do your research. Check with BBB at Bbb.org to view BBB Business Profiles and find local, BBB accredited water restoration contractors you can trust. Ask for a list of references and confirm the contractor is properly insured and registered with the PA Attorney General’s Office.
