Running for Kane Area Children’s Museum and Kids of Steel

- By Andy Mckowan

KANE—THE Pittsburgh Marathon (May 4 and 5) is almost here. This year, the marathon has a special significance for Kane in that the Kane Area Children’s Museum (KACHM) is an official charity. Also, as part of the marathon, Kane kids are participating in the “Kids of Steel” program.

Mayor Brandy Schimp is among several people who are running on marathon weekend and raising funds for KACHM before the festivities. As a challenge, Schimp said that if they raised their goal of $500 by March 14, she and her husband Lance would run a training run around Kane in larger than life costumes.

While they didn’t raise the money by their original deadline, they did hit their mark on Friday April 26. To celebrate, the couple joined the "Kids of STEEL Youngest Movers" at Kids Learning Center and went for a fun-run with them. The kids were delighted by the surprise visit

and laughed, ran, and played with the two costumed guests.

The Kids of Steel program has students from grades K-5 and younger participating training weekly. The training sessions have been going on for the last 10 weeks or so at the future location of the children's museum, the Chestnut Street Center. Parents have said that the kids have shown incredible ability and increased fitness from their training.

Each session they run at least a mile, or do 15 minutes of movement

that counts as a mile, to reach 25.2 miles total. The distance leaves them one mile shy of a full marathon. The last mile will be run during the Pittsburgh Marathon weekend on May 4 and the experience is sure to be memorable.

Mayor Schimp said, “All of the kids in the program have worked so hard this season to prepare for their one mile run next Saturday during Pittsburgh's Marathon Weekend. We are so proud of them and can't wait to watch them shine.”

About 85 Kane kids

from the program will be bussed down to Pittsburgh early Saturday morning for the Kids Marathon.

As a reminder, they are still raising money for the Kane Area Children’s Museum through the Pittsburgh Marathon’s official charity program.
