A New America

Kent County News - - OPINION -

To the editor: I once fell in love with a beautiful, intelligent, exotic creature named America. Years passed, she changed and we no longer shared values in common.

She became angry, debased, smallminded, and hypocritical. I no longer recognize her and I’m simultaneously disappointed, embarrassed and ashamed.

Trump’s petulant Man-Baby Presidency will either be a wake up call or the final straw for a broken nation. He has normalized abnormal behavior — the candidates that follow will likely be even more bizarre, extreme and unwholesome. The damage inflicted will take decades to repair and much is irreversible. The culture wars are over — idiocracy has won!

Sadly, anyone who believes the Democrats will save them from an unhinged Trump or the excesses of the Republican faithful may receive a rude awakening. Democracy is dead — the people’s only power now comes as consumers, not voters. There is but one political party with two branches — both of which are creations of the establishment ‘elite’.

Every five years, we, the inmates of this unsustainable system are per- mitted the humiliating deception of choosing the next president who has been short-listed for us by the banks, big corporations and wealthy campaign donors.

We then watch as the pre-selected candidates play “Good Cop Bad Cop Karaoke” on TV, where you decide which one is the least damaging to your wellbeing. Either way, the 1 percenters ensure their placeman/ woman wins and the rest of us loose.

Look in the mirror, the real enemy is us and the totally dysfunctional political system that enabled the crippling of a once great nation by electing a corrupt, ignorant, lying, creep into the White House.

Trump is not the problem but merely a symptom who conveniently fills a cancerous void in American culture.

Climate change, over-population and inequality are taking over as the principal drivers of our society. If Trump was truly a leader he should have said he wanted to make the planet great again. The choice now is to either ditch unsustainable capitalism and save the Earth, or rescue capitalism and dump the planet.

If ever there was one country where Utopia could have been real- ized it had to be in America. Wake up people, you can do better than this! Ted Newcomen
