Highway marker honors H.H. Garnet
CHESTERVILLE — A roadway marker with information about Henry Highland Garnet was unveiled Saturday by members of the Historical Society of Kent County. The marker highlights Garnet’s work as an orator, noting that he was the first African American to speak in the U.S. Capitol. The marker is located on state Route 291, near the intersection of state Route 290, in the area of where Garnet was born into slavery in 1815.
